Don’t fear flaky scalp

Dandruff is nothing to fear. Though it can be a bother, there are many ways to address unwanted flakes. Here at Professional Salon Concepts we want to help you understand your scalp as well as how to best care for it! So, what are some of the causes of dandruff to begin with?

Irritated and oily skin

It seems contradictory that flakes in your hair can be a result of oily skin; however, the overproduction of oil can suffocate the hair follicles and scalp. When this happens the skin becomes irritated which can lead us to itch or scratch. As we loosen this excess oil and skin from our scalps it dries and becomes flaky thus resulting in dandruff. Similarly associated with oil on the scalp, a yeast-like fungus called malassezia is another known cause of dandruff. This fungus feeds on the oils of the scalp and is most often treated with an antifungal treatment. Beyond excessive oil production, there are a few other noted causes of dandruff.

Dry skin and other skin conditions

On the other side of the oily coin, too dry a scalp will result in flakes. A lack of oil production leaves your scalp and roots unmoisturized and susceptible to flaking. Other drying or irritative skin conditions can also contribute to dandruff. Eczema is a common culprit. This skin condition causes itchy and dry patches on the skin which can be majorly irritating. If you have eczema on your scalp consider conferring with your hairstylist as well as a dermatologist to see what would be the best course of action for you.

Contact dermatitis

While this can be considered a skin condition, it is one that you might bring upon yourself strangely enough! Contact dermatitis can be described as a red and itchy rash like skin irritation that occurs after the application of a topical product. Usually resulting as an allergic reaction, the best way to stop this reaction is to remove the culprit. If you have recently added a new product to your regimen try removing it and see if your irritation subsides. Take a look at the ingredients and try to differentiate what is new in this from what you might’ve replaced. Understanding what your allergies are is a great way to avoid purchasing products in the future that might lead to another outbreak of contact dermatitis.
