Calling all Haircare Newbies!

Where to begin?

Before thinking about what products to grab, you should first know your hair. What is your hair texture? Do you have straight, wavy, curly, or coily/kinky hair? Does your scalp produce excess oil or are you naturally drier? These are the types of things to consider when choosing the best hair products for you and your hair! While you can get this information from your hairdresser, here are some other ways to self identify your hair type.

Texture

When referring to one’s hair texture, we are considering the diameter and roughness of each hair strand. There are three texture types: fine, medium, and coarse; each of these are indicators to the strength of the individual strand. Fine hair is the most fragile, while medium and coarse hair have more protein in their structures. Fine hair also tends to be drier which is why it breaks easier however, the cuticle is often smoother than medium or coarse hair.

Curl Pattern

Often when classifying curl patterns we use a letter and number pairing that represent the amount of curl found in the follicle. A table numbering two to four on one axis and a, b, and c, on the other illustrates the different combinations of shape and tightness that can be found in your hair. This table starts at two because one is thought to be stick straight. Two through four represent wavy, curly, and coily hair in that order. Type two hair usually tops out at a well defined s-shape wave. Type three hair is where we begin to see spirals form. Type four hair is actually the most delicate and often characterized by very tight coils or a zigzag pattern. Letters a, b, and c refer to your hair’s texture as we mentioned above. From fine, medium, to coarse the texture of your hair impacts how it lays on your head.

Oil Production

As we’ve seen there are many different types of hair and the differences don’t stop there. Everyone’s scalp produces a different amount of oil! Whether you feel like an oil factory or if you are in need of some extra moisture J Beverly Hills has got the products for you. The dry shampoo will be sure to absorb your excess oil leaving your hair feeling refreshed! If you find that you have an extra oily scalp it may be due to over washing! Shampooing less might aid in the over production.
