How to Deal With the Post-Holiday Slump at Your Salon

Leading up to the holidays, your salon will be packed with people trying to get ready for parties, family gatherings, and work events. But once the holidays are over, you may end up facing a slight dip in your business. Though the post-holiday slump is temporary, it can leave you wondering how to fill your time between those more sporadic appointments. Here are a few things you can do to keep yourself occupied.

Take Some Much-Deserved Time Off
If there’s a week or two when you have no appointments scheduled, consider taking some much-deserved time off. Stay at home and rest. Go on a trip. Visit out-of-town friends and family. The options are limitless. Just make sure to give yourself permission to unwind. After all, the point of your break is to rest and recharge so you can be ready to get back to work when you return.

Examine Your Inventory
Those down times at your salon are the perfect time to run through your inventory and reorganize your tools, storage areas, desk, and anything else that may be disheveled after the craziness leading up to the holidays. Look at how many products you have in stock and make a plan to order replacements before the next wave of appointments. If you notice products that haven’t been selling or aren’t happy with, upgrade them. Work with a high-end brand like J Beverly Hills for all of your hair care needs. Stock up on lotion from Freyja. Invest in tools to help you tackle the new year with confidence.

Restock Your Inventory
If your inventory is looking a little thin after all of your holiday appointments, use the downtime to stock up on the products your clients love. Pay close attention to the items you’re selling fastest and make a plan to order more before business picks back up. This way, you’ll have the items you need to keep your clients happy and their hair healthy.

Get Active on Social Media
During slumps in your business, it’s easy to feel discouraged. Don’t. Just get proactive. Instead of waiting for customers to schedule appointments, take a look at your marketing efforts, particularly the things you’re doing on social media. If you’ve been active, consider interacting with your customers more. If you haven’t been active, try to build your social media presence. Showcase tips, videos, before and after photos (with your client’s permission), and anything else you think might help you stand out.

Offer Discounts to Regulars
If you’re struggling to get people through the doors, consider offering discounts to regular clients, but do so strategically. Give them a set amount off of their next appointment for each client they refer to you. This can get traffic into your salon and help you expand your client base so next season’s lull will be less of an issue.
