4 Easy Ways to Reduce Waste in Your Salon

No matter how large or small your salon is, you’re likely creating a lot of waste. Between packing materials for the products you order and empty bottles of hair dye and shampoo from your wash and coloring stations, all that waste can really add up. Luckily, there are things you can do to reduce your waste and make your salon more eco-friendly. Here are a few easy ways to reduce the amount of trash you send to the landfill.

1. Ditch the Paper Towels
Some items used in salons simply have to be disposable. This helps protect your clients from contaminants, pathogens, and other potentially harmful fluids. But other items can easily be reused and can even make your salon feel more luxurious for your clients. Instead of using paper towels in your bathroom, consider using reusable terrycloth towels that you can wash with your other towels. Your clients will notice the change immediately and will feel like they’ve stepped into an incredibly high-end salon.

2. Recycle Drink Containers
If you offer bottles of water, soda, or adult beverages to your clients as they wait, you know that those containers can generate a lot of waste. Instead of simply tossing those bottles and cans in the trash, recycle them. You can even install recycling bins throughout your salon so clients and staff alike can easily toss recyclable products into the bin rather than throwing them away. So, where should you put them? Have at least one bin by the reception area and at least one near your wash stations. This way, your stylists can recycle empty bottles of J Beverly Hills Shampoo and styling products easily.

3. Use Eco-Friendly Paper Products
Instead of buying bleached paper products, look for recycled versions. These products are just as high-quality as the brands you find in big box stores, but they help repurpose paper waste and turn it into products that you can use again. This helps keep waste out of landfills and ultimately makes your business more sustainable. You can easily buy recycled printer paper for invoices, recycled receipt paper for in-salon purchases, bamboo and recycled paper tissues, and more.

4. Recycle and Reuse Your Boxes
When you order tons of products for your salon, it’s normal to end up with a lot of cardboard boxes in your storage room. Instead of tossing these in the trash, collapse them down and recycle them as long as they’re free of spills and grease. You may also be able to repurpose some of those boxes for storage either in the salon or in your home. And if you have more boxes than you know what to do with, consider offering them as moving boxes if clients mention that they’re moving to a new home.

Reducing Waste Is Possible
Reducing the waste your salon produces is both possible and highly beneficial. Not only will you make your business more eco-friendly, but you can also attract new clients who prioritize supporting businesses with sustainable initiatives.
